Our Advice About Getting Veneers
Every day we receive a large number of enquiries about veneers. Most people want the best brand, usually Emax or Lumineer however, the brand and type of veneers you should have are largely dictated by your teeth. The more stained or crooked your teeth the thicker the veneer must be to cover this. If the teeth are too crooked for veneers then crowns are an option. Veneers only cover the front of your teeth whereas crowns cover all of the tooth. This also means that the preparation for a crown involves filling down all the tooth sides.
Some people want their whole mouth done but you really only need the teeth that show when you smile done. This is sometimes just 8 at the top and 8 at the bottom.
You could think about having veneers if:
- You have small gaps between your teeth.
- You have stained teeth.
- You have misshapen or very small teeth.
- You have slightly crooked teeth.
- You have slightly cracked or chipped teeth.
You will not be able to have veneers if:
- Any of the flaws with your teeth is more than minimal.
- You have crowding of your teeth.
- You grind your teeth
- You clench your jaws.
- You have poor oral health.
- You do not have much enamel.
In order for the dentist to ensure you are a good candidate for veneers you must send photographs of the front and sides of your smile showing your bite and also a recent (max 2 months old) X ray. Many clients end up getting a combination of veneers and crowns.
Veneers are a purely cosmetic treatment they do not correct any underlying problems. They are just a quick and easy way to get a beautiful smile compared to long orthodontic treatment requiring numerous visits.
Having porcelain or Emax veneers will require two trips to the dentist. On the first trip your teeth will be prepared and the temporary veneers fitted if required. The dentist will have made impressions which will be sent to the lab and a dental technician will carefully cut out each veneer to fit your teeth perfectly.
At least 2 weeks before having your veneers it may be advisable to use a dental whitening system such as Enlighten Evo. This is to ensure that no discolouration shows through the veneer and that the colour matching is done with the whitest your teeth can be.
Types of Veneer
In addition to choosing the correct material and brand how your veneer look will depend upon the dentist chosen. Fitting veneers is a work art and as such the dentist should be both a dentist and an artist with a high level of expertise.
These are a good choice if you only have minor changes to make and budget is a big factor. These are made of plastic or resin and are built up by the dentist in the consultation room , hardened using high intensity light and then sculpted and built up further by the dentist. The artistic expertise of the dentist is crucial when having composite veneers. The fact that the dentist makes them while you wait rather than being made by a dental technician in a lab means that you will not be required to make a second visit to the dentist. The resin is built over the natural teeth with minimal prep work meaning that you can safely have the veneers removed if you should wish to do so. They are much cheaper than porcelain veneers costing 267EUR each. The disadvantage of composite veneers is there lack of durability, they have a life span of 7 – 10 years . Composite veneers are porous and therefore will stain, as do natural teeth. You will need to look after your oral hygiene very well to get the most out of your investment. They are not as transluscent as natural teeth.
These are made of Feldpathic porcelain which are extremely thin, 0.2mm , but is also very week. The company claims that they require no preparation but most dentists will prepare the teeth slightly so that the veneers look as natural as possible. It is quite simple to get Lumineers to colour match existing teeth so if you only want a couple of veneers choosing a feldspathic porcelain material would make sense. If your bite is not quite straight then there is a high risk of the tooth on the opposing jaw chipping the veneer due to the materials weakness. If Lumineers are well cared for they may last up to 20 years.
These are made of pressed ceramic by Ivoclar Vivadent Corporation. They are thicker than Lumineers but are much stronger. They are considered the most aesthetically pleasing being incredibly realistic and translucent. If the teeth are not too crooked these can be applied with no preparation of the teeth ,meaning that if you change your mind in years to come you can have them removed. They cost around 411 Euros each (480 USD). If taken care of they should last 25 years.
There can be a huge amount of preparation involved, a full mouth may take up to 6 hours while the teeth are filed down, reshaped and the temporary veneers made and fitted. The fact that the teeth need to be prepared means that having veneers is a life commitment, you will always need to cover the teeth which have had part of the enamel removed.
Porcelain veneers are stain resistant so if you only have a few veneers you will need to pay attention to your oral cleaning routine so that your natural teeth don’t become stained and a visible different colour to your veneers.
