bone grafts / augmentation
The term bone graft sounds a bit scary but it really isn’t! Bone grafting, also called bone augmentation is a simple, quick, and incredibly common procedure. In the past bone was scraped off from another part of your body, usually another part of the jaw or hip and the granules added to the area. In more recent years the granules are either bovine or synthetic. If you definitely do not want an animal based material used then do make this clear when booking your appointment.
How will I know if I need a bone graft?
When you make an enquiry with Hungarian Dental Travel be sure to send an X Ray of the area to be treated. If you just have one area a small x ray may be sufficient to get a rough idea of cost but if you need several area or a full mouth treating then an OPG (panoramic X Ray) would be needed. Ideally you should have a 3D CT scan but if you don’t already have one when you arrive at our dental clinic one can be taken there for around 150 Euros for both jaws ($175).
Why is a bone graft needed?
The alveolar bone in your jaw has one function, to hold your teeth in place. If a tooth is absent then the bone is not needed anymore and starts to dissolve. When you finally get round to having your implant or notice that your face has begun to sag you will first need a bone graft to hold the implant in place. You can lose bone for other reasons too.
- Trauma to the face e.g. an accident
- Developmental or genetic defects
Does a bone graft hurt?
There are not many nerves in the jaw bone so it is not as painful as you may think. However, to make you more comfortable you will be given a local anaesthetic so the procedure will be painless. If you choose to have sedation for this then you may have it. The area may feel sore for up to two days later and you can take your usual choice of painkillers for this for example ibuprofen and/or paracetamol.
What are the risks for a bone graft?
Bone grafts are very common any are usually part and parcel to having implants. It is a simple outpatient procedure which is usually unproblematic. There is a risk of infection and some people are give antibiotics just in case this happens.
Types of Bone Graft
There are three types of bone graft depending on how much bone needs building up and where in the jaw the implant is to be positioned. These can be thought of as small, medium and large bone grafts.
Small bone graft or a Socket Graft
These are done at the same time that a tooth is extracted and it prevents any bone resorbing. It is an inexpensive procedure costing around 180 Euros per tooth. A small amount of, usually, hydroxyapattite, a granular synthetic material is packed into the socket and kept in place with a membrane and a couple of dissolvable stitches. Over the next few months your own bone uses the apatite as a framework to grow around to eventually form a stable environment for your implant to go.
Medium bone graft
If the tooth or teeth have been missing for some time then the dentist will make a tiny incision in the area , prepare the bone surface and either place scrapings from another part of your jaw along with some hydroxyapatite granules or more usually just the apatite. The graft is kept in place by a membrane and then sutured. Depending on the size of the area to be augmented this costs between 200 to 400 Euros (around 234 to 468 USD).
Large bone graft
This needs to be done in people who have had no teeth for a very long time, typically denture wearers. So little bone remains that they cannot wear the dentures anymore. The procedure is the same as for the medium graft but it takes much longer for the natural to grow enough in both height and width to be able to accommodate implants. Sometimes bone from the hip or tibia needs to be used.
The upper jaw has an additional issue. The upper molars sit below the maxillary sinuses. Click here to read about sinus lifts.
